Marine Fuel Injector Cleaning
Ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing for outboard, inboard, and sterndrive gasoline fuel injectors.
Marine engines are hard on fuel injectors. Between ethanol-blended fuel, seasonal storage, and high-humidity operating conditions, boat injectors clog faster than automotive ones. And when they do, you notice it immediately: hard starting, rough idle at the dock, poor hole shot, increased fuel consumption, and loss of power at wide-open throttle.
The problem is that most marinas and marine mechanics don't have a flow bench. They'll either tell you to try a fuel additive (which won't fix hardened deposits) or quote you $200+ per injector for new ones. Professional cleaning costs a fraction of replacement and gets most injectors back to factory flow specs.

Why Marine Injectors Clog Faster
Ethanol Fuel
Most marine fuel contains 10% ethanol (E10), which absorbs water from the air over time. When fuel sits in the tank and fuel system for weeks or months, which happens every off-season, the ethanol separates from the gasoline and forms a corrosive layer that leaves gummy deposits throughout the fuel system, especially inside the injectors.
Seasonal Storage
A car engine runs year-round, which keeps fuel flowing and deposits from hardening. A boat engine might sit from October to May with fuel in the lines. That's seven months for deposits to bake onto injector internals. By spring, injectors that were running fine in the fall can be partially clogged.
Operating Conditions
Marine engines run harder than most automotive engines. Wide-open throttle is normal operating range for a boat, and the salt air and humidity accelerate corrosion. Injectors that would last 100,000+ miles in a car may need cleaning after 200-300 hours on the water.
Mercury Optimax Injector Cleaning
Mercury Optimax engines use a unique direct injection system with both air injectors and fuel injectors. The air injectors pressurize the fuel charge, and the fuel injectors deliver the actual fuel. Both types can clog, and both need to be cleaned for the engine to run right.
We service both Optimax air and fuel injectors. If you're sending in a full set, include both types and label them clearly. We'll clean, backflush, and flow test each one individually and provide a full report showing before-and-after flow data.
Common Optimax symptoms that point to dirty injectors:
- Hard starting or extended cranking
- Rough idle at the dock
- Loss of power at WOT
- Excessive smoke
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine alarm codes related to fuel delivery
